Facts about Lice

If you have ever experienced head lice, then you will know that it is not fun!  The article below explains why.

Head Lice

The head louse is a tiny, wingless parasitic insect that lives among human hairs and feeds on tiny amounts of blood drawn from the scalp. Lice (the plural of louse) are a very common problem, especially for kids. They’re contagious, annoying, and sometimes tough to get rid of.

But while they’re frustrating to deal with, lice aren’t dangerous. They don’t spread disease, although their bites can make a child’s scalp itchy and irritated, and scratching can lead to infection.

It’s best to treat head lice quickly once they’re found because they can spread easily from person to person.

Although they’re very small, lice can be seen by the naked eye. Here are things to look for:

We thought our readers would enjoy this. Take a look closely at these combs as how they resemble the exact lice combs that we use. Although, we use the highest quality lice combs on the market, it is interesting to see what people did in the not so recent past for lice removal.

Thirty years ago, parasitologist Kostas Mumcuoglu and anthropologist Joseph Zias were examining a first-century hair comb excavated from the West Bank when they found a surprise lurking in its fine teeth: 10 head lice and 27 louse eggs.

With their “interest in lice having been aroused,” they later wrote, they began to look more closely at some other ancient combs that had recently been excavated. To their delight, eight of the 11 combs unearthed in the Judean Desert contained lice, eggs, or both.

Again, take a moment to see the exact combs used in the 14th and 15th century. For more lice removal, take a look at http://licemagic.com Are you in Denver, see our new Drive Folder here: https://goo.gl/yot5WP

While most of the comb’s original paint has worn off, the gold on the hair of the figures remains intact.

Lice and Summer Camps

No that it’s Summer, lice are definitely on the move! We thought you would enjoy this article from NJ on tips to keep lice away. Summer’s are meant to be fun, not full of lice. Take a moment to read the tips they share!

How to Keep Lice Away at Summer Camp – Westfield NJ Patch While school is winding down and you are preparing your kids for summer the last thing you are thinking about is: head lice.

Summer is such an exciting time of year. As parents we make sure our children have summer clothes that fit, bathing suits, bug spray and sunscreen, but we never think about lice. Lice are an all year problem but more prevalent in the summer because we are all so much more social during the warmer months. Michele Barrack the owner of Lice Lifters franchising company knows there are ways to prevent those creepy crawlers from ruining your summer. Children are just more active in the summer; there are more play dates, sleep overs, day camps, and overnight camps. Michele Barrack, the owner of 2 of the 14 Lice Lifters around the country, feels the best way to keep lice away before the summer is to get a lice head check, pull hair back in a tight bun or ponytail and to spray Lice Lifters Mint Spray on the hair every day. Head lice do not like the smell of mint; Lice Lifters Mint Spray is also a detangler.

In another recent story, we see more tips on as to how to keep lice from coming home with you after summer camp. Take a moment to read the question and answer section and tips you can follow at home to help prevent a lice infestation.

Keep lice from hitchhiking home from camp | People’s Pharmacy | stltoday.com Q • I have battled head lice with my daughter for more than three years. She keeps getting them over and over. None of the medicines that I have used are working. Please help!

A • We have heard from many parents that head lice have become resistant to some OTC drugstore treatments. With summer camp approaching and increased exposure, children will be more vulnerable than usual.

Although home remedies are rarely tested in a scientific manner, many desperate parents have reported success suffocating the lice with mayonnaise or Cetaphil cleanser. One mother wrote: “I coated my daughters’ hair with lots of mayo, wrapped the hair in plastic wrap and put shower caps on them. In an hour, I took the hair down, washed it with dish soap (great to get rid of the oil), combed out the bugs and repeated these steps until the hair was clean. No more lice!”

The Latest on a Lice Infestation in the News

Situations like these are very common, unfortunately. For those with head lice, it can be puzzling, especially when lice is not addressed in a timely manner. If you are in the Colorado area and you are dealing with lice, give us a call at 303-642-0749.

DENNISVILLE – Beset by what is claimed to be a recurring problem at her daughter’s middle school, Lauren McGowan is scratching her head; not because of the lice that are at issue. During the school year McGowan’s 13-year-old daughter has been absent nearly three weeks. This was, McGowan contends, the result of six separate lice incidents in a three-month span originating from Dennis Township Middle School. The McGowans want to know why no notice was given to parents.

Superintendent Mark Miller, of the Dennis Township school system, reported no knowledge of a lice problem when questioned by the Herald. Miller stated that any incidents involving students that may have occurred were not resulting from attendance at the school.

The Culprit Classified as a parasite, head lice are more commonly found on females. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that lice affect 6 to 12 million people annually. Girl’s Head Lice Has Mom Puzzled, School District Unaware of Problem – Cape May County Herald: Health & Wellness

So, what was the issue? It looks like that the lice problem was not reported, which can lead to greater problems. Read on:

The problem may have begun as far back as October or November when a son of one of McGowan’s friends reported having lice. The mother (who wished to remain anonymous) claimed that the school nurse verified the infestation but did not send the child home. Up to three other children, according to this mother, also had lice during this incident.

After several run-ins with the parasite, McGowan called the school to inform them what her daughter was experiencing in the hopes of getting the word out to other parents as well as prodding the school to act.

McGowan claimed a school nurse told her that random inspections were no longer done unless close contact was known to have occurred. Read more here:

Something’s new on the horizon. Sea Lice, for those who are headed to Florida,  you need to read this. See more about Lice Magic here: http://licemagic.com/index.php/about-us/

Have you heard of Sea Lice?

They cause flu-like symptoms and intense itching.

You’re probably already familiar with head lice (whether you’ve had it yourself, or know someone who has). But have you heard of sea lice? If you’ve got any beach plans this summer — particularly in Florida or elsewhere in the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean — listen up.

Seabather’s eruption, or sea lice, is almost-invisible and lurks in warm oceans. While they’re an issue every year, ABC’s KTRK-TV of Houston has reported that sea lice outbreaks are on the rise this year, particularly on beaches along the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the Florida Department of Health, sea lice are about the size of a speck of pepper, and are actually the larvae of adult jellyfish. Because they are essentially tiny, baby jellyfish, some people do experience an immediate stinging sensation if they get them on their skin, only to break out in a rash or intense itching later on. This can last for as long as two weeks. Severe cases can also produce flu-like symptoms.

Lice are NO Fun

If you are having problem with lice in the Denver or surrounding areas, give us a call, we can help. See our Denver page here: http://ift.tt/1OhnhtT

What makes lice so terrible though?

Read what WebMD.com has to say about lice.

Lice spread easily from one person to another through close contact or through shared clothing or personal items (such as hats or hairbrushes). A louse cannot jump or fly.

The most common symptom of lice is itching. There are different symptoms, depending on which type of lice you have.

Head lice may not cause any symptoms at first. Itching on the scalp may start weeks or even months after lice have started to spread. Scratching can make the skin raw. The raw skin may ooze clear fluid or crust over, and it may get infected.

Treat-lice.com give us more information:

Head lice Treatment’s Early Days

The latin name for head lice is Pediculus humanus capitis, and when you’re talking about a lonely no-friends beast all on its own, it’s called a head louse. As stomach-churning as it sounds, their whole reason for existing is to feast on the blood-rich field that is your head; reason enough to start seeking out head lice treatments! It may not give you much relief to know that at least we humans aren’t alone, and nits exist for pretty much well every animal and bird species out there. You might find it interesting to know, though, that once a louse is on your head, it’s not going anywhere else; unlike fleas, nits can’t jump from one host to another, and so whichever head louse treatment you use against your unwanted guests, it’s good to know that your lice won’t be jumping on to anybody else at the first sign of trouble.
